The Aztecs were a civilization that had the blood-thirst as one of its main cultural traits. This was due to the believe of the Aztecs that their gods were actually very blood-thirsty and they wanted human sacrifices to satisfy their blood lust. This resulted in the constant sacrifice of people by the Aztecs, mostly people that were conquered and taken as captives. The Europeans were finding their rituals disgusting, and indeed they were, but on the other hand that is weird considering that the Europeans were constantly doing similar things. It was a common thing in Europe to use torture devises that were slowly killing the people placed on them, public hanging, chopping off heads, even burning people alive because of suspected witchcraft.
