Another diference was the fact that neither Adams (Federalist) nor Jefferson (Democratic-Republic) actively campaigned for the presidency.

What makes this election rather ¨modern¨ is the fact that Federalists accused the Democratic-Republicans of French Revolution violence, who in turn accused the Federalists of favoring monarchism and aristrocracy.
