In the 1796 election no distinction was made between electoral votes for president and electoral votes for vice president. This was corrected in the 12th Amendment in 1804. Another diference was the fact that neither Adams (Federalist) nor Jefferson (Democratic-Republic) actively campaigned for the presidency.

What makes this election rather ¨modern¨ is the fact that Federalists accused the Democratic-Republicans of French Revolution violence, who in turn accused the Federalists of favoring monarchism and aristrocracy.
