The contentious issue which is being debated is whether Scopes had taught EVOLUTION  to his students in a Tennessee state funded school,violation of the Butler Act.Scopes purposely incriminated himself so that the case could have a defendant.He was found guilty and fined $100 which was overturned on technicality.
