The vertical pressure gradient in the atmosphere is ______ than the horizontal pressure gradient; vertical winds in the atmosphe
Andru [333]

The vertical pressure gradient in the atmosphere is larger than the horizontal pressure gradient, and vertical winds in the atmosphere are less than the horizontal winds.

A pressure gradient can be defined as a magnitude of difference in pressure of two areas or regions which results in a force that is responsible for the movement of air from high pressure to a low-pressure region. Pascals per meter is the unit used for pressure gradient. Generally, the pressure gradient strength in the Earth's lowest atmosphere layer is 9 pascals per meter.

The vertical pressure gradient is about 100 times larger than the horizontal pressure gradient but gravity tends to slow or decrease the vertical flow of air so the winds don't blow straight up and the vertical winds are less than horizontal winds.
