The main author of the US Declaration of Independence is Thomas Jefferson, who represented the colony of Virginia. Most people didn´t know this before the 1790s, believing it had been a collective effort by the Continental Congress. Jefferson was admired by his eloquence and intellect. He was also well acquainted with the progressive ideas of the time, the high ideals of the Enlightenment. He later confessed that he had asked John Adams and Benjamin Franklin for correction before giving a draft to a committee and  to the whole Congress.
