During the time period of Western expansion(if this is indeed what you are talking about) America was at a time period where all colonials (they weren't referred to as colonists at this time they were immigrants from Germany, Ireland, etc and "american" people) had begun to want to explore more territories and land. This caused a huge need to learn what all else was out there. the 1800s presented a time period where they needed to understand what all else was out there. perhaps the developing railway system, the iron works, the business foundations(such as horizontal and vertical integration) are one of the hugest factors the 1800s presented.

As regards religion, they had the desire to spread Christianity, to protect european missionaries in other lands, to spread european values and moral beliefs and to educate peoples of other cultures.
