For me the correct word would be globalization.
The first industrial revolution implied important changes in society, the appearence of companies and industrial capitals, of the first consumption habits. It is then, a technological discovery that transcends the pure productive chain to configure new habits and social structures. I would call this a technological revolution.
Intimately linked to the technological revolution is the phenomenon of globalization.
Globalization although we would like to stop it, we could not. A world where news and images are distributed from the most remote places, where from a portable phone we can have a conversation with another person located anywhere in the world, where we can buy, through the internet, products and services from far away countries, it is necessary and really a global world.
