Throughout <em>The Odyssey</em>, we learn that it is extremely important for Greek culture to be a good host. Characters are often rewarded for acting in this way. However, we see that this is different in the case of the Phaeacians. When Odysseus arrives, they are extremely good hosts. They provide shelter, restore all the lost wealth of Odysseus and give him direct passage to Ithaca. However, in doing so, they offend Poseidon, which leads to Zeus allowing Poseidon to punish them.
