  Because it involved many nations.

Explanation:

  It was called the Great War because the world has never seen a conflict of that size. Over 59 million troops were mobilized. Many millions of people died or get injured. The conflict reshaped politically, economically, socially, and culturally Europe and the whole world.

  It was named like that because the people of those days did not believe that almost 30 years after that the world would be at the most disastrous conflict of its history.
