Why does dolphus raymond pretend to drink liquor? what does scout think about this and the reasons he gives for it?

He believes that it is easier to handle strangeness when they have a reason to explain it. Therefor, he pretends to act drunk. He thinks that children haven’t lost the feeling that it is wrong for white people to treat black people badly.
