I believe the answer is: increased amounts of vegetation

Mining would increase the amount of pollutants in the soil composition and water reserve on the environment near it. This would make a lot of types of vegetation unable to obtain necessary nutrient to survive. In the long rune, the amounts of vegetation would keep decreasing.
