Both microscopes have their advantages, but electron microscopy is more efficient then the one that is used most routinely is optical microscopy for its accessibility.

- Optical (photonic) microscopes allow the observation of dead or living cells. The most common microscope uses visible light. It is less expensive to exploit, and allows viewing a whole microorganism.

- Electron microscopes use beams of electrons that move along a wave (like light). When the electron flow is accelerated, the wavelength decreases and the resolution increases. There are two types: The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the transmission electron microscope (TEM). It is more expensive but allows to see all the details of the cell.
