The novel ends with tragic deaths of three main characters Frollo, Quasimodo, and La Esmeralda. Frollo and Quasimodo's love for La Esmeralda drives them to their tragic ends as both of their love was driven by violent acts of killings.

At first Frollo had killed Phobeus out of jealousy. Frollo lusted after La Esmeralda and thus desired for her. Whereas Quasimodo's love was loyal but his love was also followed by act of killing, killings of those who could have helped him rescue La Esmeralda.
