The Mayan, Aztec, and Inca civilizations brought major accomplishments to the world today. These accomplishments established them as advanced societies during their time without the influence of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Some of these accomplishments ranged from agriculture to architecture and on to writing and trade. Such as, the Mayans with their agriculture system of chinampas and there monumental temple/pyramids, the Aztecs with their trading in the city of Tenochtitlan, and the Incas with their road and bridge system connecting the whole empire. The Mayans were the first of the three civilizations. Although they were first they had many achievements in architecture, math and astrology, and writing. The Mayans had the …show more content…
Also, they had a pictograph form of writing system similar to that of the Mayans. Another achievement, was the city of Tenochtitlan. This city was a trading city as noticed by Spanish conqueror Hernan Cortes in document three. He was amazed of the man squares of the city, describing one with sixty thousand souls buying and selling merchandise,; the trade center of the city. One of the biggest amazements not only for Cortez but to others was their abundance of gold and silver, which would soon be the cause of European attacks to the culture With that said, the Aztecs had some major differences in culture compared to the Mayans. The Incan civilization on the other hand, lived in a completely different location on the western border of South America, while the others lived primarily in the Yucatan Peninsula. In that location there are many mountains, which changes the kind of agriculture and systems of agriculture. Their main crop was potatoes which was farmed in a system called terrace planting. Which is when there are different levels of land to grow a crop. This system was described by Garciasco de la Vega in document four. The Incas are like the Romans in the means of road systems. Five prominent examples of irony that builds tension in the story are:
- Elizabeth wants Proctor to testify that the accusations are false, but she is unaware of his role in the situation.
- Elizabeth gets mad at Proctor because he says he was alone in a room with Abigail. However, she does not know that the two were in fact having an affair.
- When asked to say the Ten Commandments, Proctor forgets the one that forbids adultery. This is ironic as this is the commandment he violated.
- Mary brags about the fact that she is keeping Elizabeth out of jail. However, Elizabeth is charged because of the doll that Mary gives her.
- Even though Mary works for Proctor, and he is more powerful than her in every way, she is able to defy him by accusing him of lechery.
All of these examples tie to Miller's purpose for writing The Crucible. In these examples, we see that Miller wants to highlight the power that the girls were able to achieve in a community that does not respect them or takes them seriously. This leads to irony because it is a situation that neither the readers nor the characters were expecting. Moreover, Miller is able to show how the web of lies and deceit that the characters are weaving will eventually lead to tragedy for all of them.
