In this excerpt, the word "wonder" has a positive connotation, something similar to "miracle." The author is arguing that people in the United States have very different racial and cultural backgrounds. It is a mixture of a lot of people from a lot of nations. However, after the attacks, all these different people came together. This is somewhat unexpected, due to their differences. But at the same time, it is a wonderful surprise.
