The second reason was that buying on credit increased personal debt. Another cause of the Great Depression was that buying on a margin was a risky market practice--Bank loands for stock purchases was an unsound practice. (Not valid). Finally, The Smoot-Hawley Tarriff created trade war worsened world economic conditions. Huge increases in taxes hurt companies and individuals.
