The answer would be B, it keeps one person or group in government from having too much power. The checks and balances system is also sometimes called the separation of powers. For example, let's say the President wanted to appoint a federal judge. He can nominate or recommend a person for the job, but the legislative branch, more specifically, the Senate, must approve of the person. However, the President can fire a federal judge without senatorial approval. This is an example of checks and balances.
