What might the author be implying in the last line of “The last rung on the ladder”

Answer:

The last obstacle in the protagonist's journey/story.

Explanation:

Since there isn't much context to the story, I am assuming that "<em>The last rung on the ladder</em>" could either have a literal or figurative meaning. If it's a literal meaning, the character might actually be climbing a ladder and they're about to take the last step (the rung) to get to the top. However, it's more probable that the author means it in a figurative sense. I believe that "<em>The last rung</em>" is referring to a series of conflict in the protagonist's life, and the author refers to the ladder and its rungs as the conflicts.

<em>Protagonist's story</em> - the ladder (as a whole)

<em>Conflicts faced </em>- the rungs of the ladder (hence "<em>The last rung on the ladder</em>"

* Hopefully that made sense :))

aalyn [17]

Amy Tan makes the reader care about her narrative in the mother tongue by

  • Her choice of words in the second paragraph
  • The way she said has three different ways of using the English language
  • How her mother is treated due to her poor grasp of English

In the second paragraph, she described language as something that can evoke an emotion out of someone.

The way she described the three different ways that she uses English language was intriguing. Her English varies during conversations with her mother, When she she is giving a conversation to her  audience, and also when she is writing.

She described her mother's English as broken and limited and how people do not pay much attention to fully understand what she has to say.

PSYCHO15rus [73]
The theme of the piece would be women are suffering and there does not seem to be any relief in sight. The only plausible answer is option A  or option B, but the words 'they are more patient' in option A is a little bit of unsupported generalization rather than a theme, so i'd pick B.

hope this helps
