At a time, when other sects were seen as corrupt, the yellow hats came to existence in the 15th century and were regarded as a purer form of Buddhism and by 17th century, yellow hats became the dominant sects.

Yellow hats sect became widely known when Mongols decided to support them in the 16th century. The central plateau was controlled by the yellow hats and this control was maintained until 19th century when British and Chinese attack Tibet.
