It tells the reader what your paper is about and what position you take on the topic of said paper. It needs to be specific and should ideally be be 1 or 2 sentences

If you're writing about how there are problems with horror movies, you  could write something like "Because modern cinematic techniques have allowed filmmakers to get more graphic, horror flicks have desensitized young American viewers to violence".
