I believe the answer is despair.                  

Explanation:

Look at the lady's face. It doesn't look impatient, nor does it look confused. So, that would leave surrender and despair. If it was surrender there would be more "information" in the painting, so it isn't surrender either and leaves us with the answer, despair.

I always think of lots of gold ornamental elements. The lines were always very curvy, reminding the viewer of wings. It's one of my least-favorite art periods, so it's the area of the museum that I avoid on the way to the modern exhibition areas!
