McCarthy implemented policies that fueled the Red Scare, later named after him as McCarthyism. He used propaganda and exaggerated the influence that communism had in America with statements such as "your neighbor may be a communist." Using these caused America to interrogate their friends and family, distrust people they had no reason to besides the fact that McCarthy said that any unusual behavior should be reported. This led to many, many false accusations of communism and very harmful hysteria.
