in act 1, laertes was dutiful. after King Claudius gave a memorable speech to his people. Laertes later asked the king permission to go to France to study and he was granted. Hamlet was sad over his father’s death. Claudius encourage Hamlet to get over it since everybody is bound to die.

in acts 4, laertes came back from college and was vert determined to get revenge for the murder of his father.Gertrude is informed that Ophelia is mad. Claudius is worried about how Ophelia's madness will affect his country.

in Act iv of the play hamlet,Claudius played a role in laertes being vengeful. Claudius agrees to the fact that Laertes deserves to be revenged upon Hamlet, and he encourages Laertes to kill Hamlet, since Hamlet's erratic behavior has made him a threat to Claudius's reign. The devious king begins to think of a way for Laertes to ensure his revenge without creating any appearance of foul play.
