The way I would help a friend who has lost a loved one is by helping them seek coping skills, and be there for them in a comforting way, and also understanding if they need time for themselves and being a shoulder to lean on. If the depression due to the lost of a loved one get's out of control I would then get someone of an higher powers attention to help my friend in ways I can't and then I'd suggest counseling while still be loyal and sticking by his/her side. The main thing you can do is be understading of their pain and not give up on them when they hit rock bottom.
