Some Americans supported the French Revolution because France helped America in when we were at war with Britain. As a country, we also signed a treaty with France which had the explicit terms of helping each other in times of need. Many Americans felt obligated to help the French, such as Frenchman himself, Thomas Jefferson. These supporters used this treaty to argue that the country was obligated to help the country with their revolution. However, most were against helping the French because the French revolution had lead to war with Britain, and if America stepped in to aid France, it would mean that America would go to war, again, with Britain. The war with Britain had severely weakened our ability to fight a war, so to go to war again would most likely lead to disastrous results.
