Answer:

Moctezuma greeted Cortés and gave him a gold collar with shrimp hanging from it. Shrimp were a symbol of the Plumed Serpent. Moctezuma gave Cortez and his men a grand palace to stay in, but after one week Cortés took Moctezuma prisoner and demanded that the Aztecs give Spain millions in gold treasure. The Aztec people revolted against Cortés and when Cortés asked Moctezuma to quiet the people, they stoned Moctezuma to death.
