Mendel realizó cruzamientos entre plantas/líneas de guisantes (<em>Pisum sativum</em>), las cuales exhibían características diferentes para dos rasgos fenotípicos tales como, por ejemplo, el color y la textura de la semilla. Este tipo de cruzamiento se conoce como cruzamiento dihíbrido. Este principio constituye la base de la segunda ley de Mendel, conocida como Ley de Segregación Independiente.
