Answer: The main character in “Caline” makes decisions that leave her unhappy, while the main character in “To Build a Fire” makes decisions that cost him his life .

Explanation:

Caline is the name of the main character in the same named short story and she went to work in a city in the south after seeing people going towards it including a young man who had attempted drawing a picture of her. She thought it was the city that interested her but in the end discovered that it was the young man she sought instead and this made her unhappy.

The main character in To Build a Fire is a young miner who decided to go to another mining camp in very cold weather even though an experienced miner warned him against it. This decision eventually cost him his life.
