For fiction, I think that the plot should tell a story such as in the history of something or someone and describe the main characters and how they are related to the story such as Jack London's Martin Eden which discusses a lot the feelings of the main protagonist working class character and his relationship to his girlfriends rich parents and their very different perspectives on life.
