1)Judy was on writer's block, a time when she couldn't think of anything to write. After a brief, distracted conversation with the children, Judy eventually returns to typing furiously on her typewriter. This prompts Leslie to comment that her mother has come "unstuck."

3)Jess has a horror of being afraid of anything,  from his father's well-known expectations that he will be a "true man."  He is unable to speak to Leslie about his fears, even though she could probably have found some way of comforting him or alleviating his fears.
