A ship lost at sea for many days suddenly sighted a friendly vessel. From the mast of the unfortunate vessel was seen a signal,“

Water, water; we die of thirst!” The answer from the friendly vessel at once came back, “Cast down your bucket where you are.” A second time the signal, “Water, water; send us water!” ran up from the distressed vessel, and was answered, “Cast down your bucket where you are.” And a third and fourth signal for water was answered, “Cast down your bucket where you are.” The captain of the distressed vessel, at last heeding the injunction, cast down his bucket, and it came up full of fresh, sparkling water from the mouth of the Amazon River. To those of my race who depend on bettering their condition in a foreign land or who underestimate the importance of cultivating friendly relations with the Southern white man, who is their next-door neighbor, I would say: “Cast down your bucket where you are”— cast it down in making friends in every manly way of the people of all races by whom we are surrounded." - Booker T. Washington "Atlanta Compromise" Speech, 1895 What did Washington mean at the end of the speech when he said, “Cast down your bucket where you are?” A) Only people with buckets could understand the metaphor. B) Always cast your bucket so that you can bring up clean water. C) Both races were responsible for friendly relations in their own homes and towns. D) Both races needed to remain separate and learn how to live in peace without interacting with others.

The story of the 47 Ronin is a real historical account of Japan. Its author wanted to reinstate in the modern times that there is more to human life than the repetitive existence and work. People must find in themselves a deeper sense of existence, a deeper meaning in life, an unending adherence to a long history of culture and loyalty. The Japanese ronin existed in an era in Japan where there were no more wars to fight. The samurai was regarded as a warrior class that earns deep respect from the people. In fears that the Japanese spirit might be slowly slipping away, it is very timely that the story of the 47 Ronin is retold. Should the author have existed in feudalistic Europe, the story would have been different because in Europe, treatment of knights is very different. The knights were given land titles to govern. Knighthood is only given to the noblemen. It is more of a status quo rather than a binding story for loyalty and respect.

Which description best describes the goal of the Pan-African movement?
viva [34]

Goal of <u>Pan-African movement</u> can be described in four common interests: 1. Strive for <em>independence</em> and <em>self-determination</em> of African nations and people. 2. Promote <em>equal civil rights</em> and abolition of <em>racial discrimination</em> for African people. 3. Foster <em>unification</em> of African people, their descents and their <em>social, political and economical integration</em> around the world, not only in Africa. 4. <em>Collaboration</em> and <em>cooperation</em> between African citizens and countries, their descents and all those institutions and people who share their aims. Therefore, best description is <u>"to support African unity and end colonialism in Africa". </u>
