The hydrogen ion pumps present in mitochondrial inner membrane, generate proton gradient  across the mitochondrial membrane.

Proton pumps are very important for the process of electron transport chain as it enables synthesis of energy molecules or ATPs by using electrochemical gradient formed by movement of protons.
