The demographics of Lebanon contained Muslims, Druze, and Christians.  (The largest group of Christians being Maronites.  The Maronites are an Eastern church in communion with the Roman Catholic Church.  

The Constitution of Lebanon, adopted in 1926, specified a balance of power between the various religious group.  The president was required to be a Christian (a Maronite), the prime minister was to be a Sunni Muslim.  Seats in parliament were allotted on a ratio of 6 Christian seats to 5 Muslim seats.

On January 1, 1944, the government of France agreed to grant independence to Lebanon. During the Civil War of 1958, the United States had to intervene to control the situation.
