Portugal was an independent Kingdom since 12th Century and in the 15th Century it became one of the maritime trade centers of the whole Europe, and thus world. They even started spreading, after they captured territories in North Africa in 1415. Their focus was on trade and ship building.

With this developments Portugal was one of the leaders when it comes to the Age of Discovery. Sailors who sailed under the flag of Portugal were among the first that sailed on the open sea. Among them we must mention Dias and Vasco de Gama.
