Answer:

37 1/8 lbs of bird seed

Step-by-step explanation:

I solved this quickly on my calculator, but I will show my work here :)

First I would do what I think is easiest. I will add the whole numbers separately and add the fractions separately. This is what I mean:

8+12+16 = 36

1/4 + 3/8 + 1/2 = 1 1/8

After I've done that then I'll add both of these answers:

36 + 1 1/8 = 37 1/8

Here's how I added the fractions:

To add fractions you must make sure the denominators ( the number below the line) are all the same. We do this by multiplying a number that will get all denominators the same, we also have to multiply the numerator (number above the line) by the same number to even out the fraction. After that you only add the numerators, but keep the denominators the same. Here's how:

(2/2) 1/4 × 3/8 --> 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8

Then we add the 5/8 to the 1/2

(4/4) 1/2 + 5/8 --> 4/8 + 5/8 = 9/8

If you haven't noticed, 9/8 is an improper fraction because the numerator is larger than the denominator. We can fix that by turning it into a mixed fraction (a fraction with a quotient and remainder. Ex. 2 1/3)

I'm sure it would still be acceptable to write your answer as 36 9/8 lbs, but in case your teacher won't accept that, I provided a photo of how to fix it :). You will need to do long divison.

So 9/8 turns into 1 1/8.

Add everything:

36 + 1 1/8 = 37 1/8

:)

|-3 + 15| what is the sum (answer) ? I think it is 12 but my friend thinks it is 18. Who is right?
Aliun [14]
I do believe it is 12 as well considering the fact that it's negative three and not positive. If it was a positive three then maybe it would be 18.
