What does the word trap refer to in this excerpt from Beowulf? ‘O flower of warriors, beware of that trap. Choose, dear Beowulf,

the better part, eternal rewards. Do not give way to pride. For a brief while your strength is in bloom but it fades quickly; and soon there will follow illness or the sword to lay you low, or a sudden fire or surge of water or jabbing blade or javelin from the air or repellent age. Your piercing eye’ will dim and darken; and death will arrive, dear warrior, to sweep you away.

This question is missing the options. I've found the complete question online. It is the following:

What does the word trap refer to in this excerpt from Beowulf?

‘O flower of warriors, beware of that trap.

Choose, dear Beowulf, the better part,

eternal rewards. Do not give way to pride.

For a brief while your strength is in bloom

but it fades quickly; and soon there will follow

illness or the sword to lay you low, or a sudden fire or surge of water

or jabbing blade or javelin from the air

or repellent age. Your piercing eye’

will dim and darken; and death will arrive,

dear warrior, to sweep you away.

A) death

B) accidents

C) old age

D) pride

Answer:

In this excerpt, the word trap refers to:

D) pride.

Explanation:

Beowulf is one of the most famous epic poems of all time. It takes the name of its main character, the hero Beowulf, who fights and defeats three monsters: Grendel, Grendel's mother, and a dragon.

In this particular excerpt, Beowulf is being advised against being proud. That is the trap he should be careful about. The speaker is telling him that all the reasons he now has to be prideful will, one day, vanish. His strength, prowess, and youth will give way to old age and death. Death, as a matter of fact, may even come early, by the hands of others.

The correct answer is D. The word "trap" refers to pride. In these lines, Beowulf is being warned. He is told to "beward of that trap," and "Do not give way to pride." Beowulf is warned that his strength will not last forever; ultimately, he will grow weak and old, or he will be injured. Either way, his strength is not something he will always have -- therefore, he must not become so proud that he forgets he is human.

Match the plot to the type of conflict.1. Carol and Brandi race for the gold medal.2. Miguel struggles with feelings of guilt3.
valkas [14]

Answer:

A. Man vs. Man - Carol and Brandi race for the gold medal.

B. Man vs. Self - Miguel struggles with feelings of guilt.

C. Man vs. Nature - Farmers experience a terrible drought.

D. Man vs. Higher power - Jonah is corrected by God.

E. Man vs. Society - Reverend Mundo protests Sunday sporting events.

Explanation:

The various forms of types of conflicts that are to be found in any narrative may be between man and nature, man with man, with self or even with the society. All these conflicts may also show the battle that the individual has to get through in order to move on with his life.

The types of conflicts along with the plot are as follows-

1. Man vs. man is seen in the competition between Carol and Brandi in their effort to get the gold medal. This competition to secure the better goal is a conflict of interest of the two persons involved.

2. Man vs. Self is seen in Miguel who is struggling with feeling guilty. This type of conflict deals with an individual and his inner emotions and feelings, a form of inner conflict within the persona and involves no other external identity.

3. Man vs. Nature is found in the farmers and the drought that had destroyed their crops. The farmers are in conflict with the terrible drought, a force of nature. Thus, it is a form of man and nature in conflict.

4. Man vs. Higher power is a form of conflict between an individual and some higher power, in this case God. God is the ever powerful entity over all, thus when Jonah disobeyed God, he gets corrected. This is a type of man vs. higher conflict.

5. Man vs. Society is shown when there is a conflict between an individual and the society he lives in. Thus, when Rev. Mundo protests against the sporting event that occurs on a Sunday, he is in conflict with the society. This conflict is based on the differences in interest.

Answer:

An objective statement is a concise, position-centered statement describing the value you can add and the needs you can fulfill. An objective may include a brief statement of skills and qualifications you will bring to a position. A professional summary is longer and provides more detail than an objective statement.
