The colonial possessions increased both the power and prestige of the Spanish crown. The discovery of a new region with resources changed the nature of trade between Europe and the New World. It introduced new agricultural products, including potatoes, tomatoes, tobacco, cocoa, maize, rubber, peanuts, and beans. The arrival of many crops and plants in Europe had nutritional results.

New land and gold led to rumours that influenced riches to procure from there. Many adventurous and ambitious men from Spain began to leave their homeland in search of territories that they could claim for their own.

Industries like shipping did well compared to agriculture which was in a backward condition. Spanish had a regular supply of gold and silver bullion from Mexico, Peru and Bolivia. Merchants began to profit a lot in the Columbus exchange.
