When dealing with differences, role of civility is to make sure that the different group didn't engage in violence as a method to resolve their differences.

Example of this would be when engaging in political discourse.

In a civil conversation, people with different political opinion can sit down and talk out their differences through scientific evidence. Even if both people couldn't change each other minds, they will become more likely to compromise with one another and sacrifice some of the things they desire to maintain order.
