The Islands of Japan are so narrow that no point in the country lies more than 150 km (93 miles) from sea waters.
To the West, there is the sea of Japan, which separates Japan from the Asian mainland. To the north, lies the sea of Okhotsk, and to the south is the East China sea. All these are extensions of the Pacific ocean which lies to the east of Japan. To the far south-east lies the Philippine sea.

Figurative is something that shouldn't be taking literally. For example, when you say "I have a ton of homework" you don't really mean you have 2000 pounds of homework.
The answer to this is entirely dependent on your own opinion. Some might believe it’s acceptable in order to keep the country safe, but others might not because they believe it infringes on individual freedoms. There are pros and cons to both sides, so you have to determine which side you agree with more.
