When the slave ship docked, the slaves would be taken off the ship and placed in a pen like this one. There they would be washed and their skin covered with grease, or sometimes tar, to make them look more healthy.

Many things would happen at slave auctions, hers would use certain materials to change the looks of slaves so that they would make more of a profit for them period. Women would mainly be sold to wealthier people with bigger houses to do household chores and the men will be sore to are owners and farm owners to do most of the fieldwork. You would be sold. Afterwords they would be placed on a boat into the slaveowners home and if they were placed on a boat they would all be chained together for weeks at a time with little food. Auction many families were separated daughters and sons were taken away from the mother and most likely never seeing each other again.
