Because of the corruption in the Catholic church, Protestantism emerged. This religion quickly became just as prevalent as Catholicism, with many converting. People became more skeptic of religion and the church, which eventually led to a more secular and humanist Europe, which is reflected in the art and literature of the time period. The goal of the Catholic Reformation was to reinstate the original and traditional practices of Catholicism, that way making it the purest form of the religion. To achieve this, they also conducted mass in Latin, instead of the vernacular.
