America’s first political parties emerged in the late 1790s. The Democratic-Republicans were led by Thomas Jefferson. The Federalists were led by George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and John Adams.

The Democratic-Republican Party or the Anti-Administration party (Anti-Federalists) opposed the strong central government that the Constitution established when it went into effect in 1789, and the Federalist Party supported the ratification of the American Constitution. George Washington served as a uniting force of political parties throughout the first eight years of the country's existence.
