If the president could make treaties and appointments on his own without seeking approval from any other body, he/she could make their best buddy from college the Secretary of State, despite them possibly knowing nothing of the U.S. or foreign governments.  Or, the president could make a treaty with a country that everyone in America dislikes, only because that country promised to sell the president land in exchange for a treaty.  By going through the Senate, treaties and appointments are filtered to ensure that qualified and reasonable appointments and agreements are made.

Southerners migrated southwestward in huge numbers between 1830 and 1860, seeking new lands for the: a) cultivation of tobacco.
Phoenix [80]

Answer: B. Production of cotton

Explanation: The invention of the cotton gin in this 1793 tied the economy of the Southern states to cotton production. By the 1860, production of cotton by the South represented more than half of all American exports. This led to the rapid expansion southwest as Southerners needed more land to cultivate cotton, as it had proved to be the crop of choice.

This allowed the American South to expand its wealth and population and became an integral part of an increasingly global economy. Also, because of its trading and export potentials, merchants from the Northeast, Europe, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean flocked to Southern cities, setting up trading firms, warehouses, ports, and markets.

1. Why was Dred Scott case important
Kryger [21]
The Dred Scott decision was the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on March 6, 1857, that having lived in a free state and territory did not entitle an enslaved person, Dred Scott, to his freedom. In essence, the decision argued that, as someone's property, Scott was not a citizen and could not sue in a federal court.
