I learned that on August 28, 1963, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom occurred. More than 250,000 people came to a rally on the National Mall. They marched to the Lincoln Memorial to hear speeches from religious and civil rights leaders. It was the largest peaceful demonstration in the country’s history. At the end of the day, President John F. Kennedy met with their leaders at the White House.

The March on Washington brought attention to a civil rights bill that was later passed. The bill includes protections against discrimination in voter qualification tests. It outlaws discrimination in public accommodations such as hotels, restaurants, and theaters. It allows the US Attorney to file suits to enforce desegregation in public schools.

Today these rights are part of life in the United States. They are a step in the direction of accomplishing Martin Luther King, Jr.’s vision.
