A watershed is an area of land where water drains to a single location. Building dams and rerouting rivers are two examples of ways humans directly impact water in watersheds. Humans also use water as a resource, drawing from watersheds for our drinking water.

Land use has a major impact on the water quality of both surface and ground water. Land use refers to the human use of the land. ... Certain kinds of land use can change the hydrology of the Watershed, altering the way water and pollutants move through the drainage basin.

White raven [17]
When you compress something you are pushing it into a smaller space. When something contracts, it gets smaller. An example of contraction is when the volume of a mass of water gets smaller as it cools.

Read the following excerpt from the "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T. S. Eliot:
mars1129 [50]

Even though option D is also related to Modernism and could be related to the excerpt, option C seems to be the correct one: It conveys the idea of isolation from modern life.

Modernist were called "the lost generation" because of their search for meaning among the fragments of modern life. In the excerpt, the words "lonely men" seem to address the theme of isolation and alienation in society. While everyone seems to have a role to perform in modern life, that does not mean they have found their true identity. Some sort of value seems to have been lost and, with it, men lost themselves. Modernism is characterized by the search of such value.
