Explanation:

Japan being an Island and mountainous region, did not have much land as it is surrounded by water. Geographically, about 73 per cent of Japan is mountainous. Japan has 27 per cent Plain region where most of the population is situated. Rice (paddy) cultivation is common in Japan's mountainous fields as rice is the staple food of the country.
