The issue of slavery was a major underlying issue to the formation of the Republican party.

On May 20th, 1854,  a group of politically- minded former Whigs met in Ripon , Wisconsin to talk about the possibility of forming a new political party that would focus on preventing the spread of slavery in the Western territories. The idea  took off and on June 6th 1854, over 10,000 people  gathered in Jackson, Michigan to establish the new party and thus the Republican party was born.

The year 1851 saw the adoption of a new constitution in Ohio.The constitution gave voters the right to elect governors, other high ranking state officials and the judges, unlike before where the legistlature had the power to appoint judges and other government officials which gave it an almost complete control of the government. In addition the constitution provided for an addition of a third level of district courts instead of the previous two level district court between the supreme court and common pleas court.

<span>It was Article 231 that came to be called the War Guilt clause that held Germany responsible for causing the war.  It humiliated the Germans and they were very angry about it.  It also forced the Germans to pay for damages caused by the war.  This bitter resentment among the Germans would later be used by Adolf Hitler to rally the German people under his leadership and led to the rise of Nazism in Germany.  When Hitler assumed power, he began invading one country after another which led to World War II.</span>
