That means river valleys were the best place – they allow irrigation, and the soil in them is full of minerals and fertile, which makes it good for growing crops. The rivers also allow good transportation and trade.

This is why some of the earliest civilizations grew near Tigris, Euphrat, and Nile, in the so-called Fertile Crescent. These were the civilizations of Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt. Ealy civilization of Ancient India also developed in the valley of the river Indus. The Ancient Chinese civilizations developed a bit later, again in the valley of the river – Yellow river.
