Después de la absorción de glucosa por el intestino delgado, las moléculas de glucosa se difunden por un gradiente de concentración hacia la sangre capilar dentro de las vellosidades y estas moléculas de glucosa se liberan en el torrente sanguíneo. Cuando las moléculas de glucosa se agregan al torrente sanguíneo, la glucosa puede usarse para la producción de energía o almacenarse en nuestros cuerpos, que puede usarse cuando sea necesario. Si nuestro cuerpo necesita energía esta glucosa es absorbida por las mitocondrias de las células para la producción de energía mientras que por otro lado, si no se requiere energía, estas moléculas de glucosa se almacenan en diferentes órganos en forma de glucógeno.
