I think a big reason some people become toxic and spread rumors may be due to the influence of other friends and jealousy. People tend to become toxic because they want something that you may have, or even want to be like you, so they degrade you so that they can feel better about themselves and feel more accepted.  It could even be just to turn people against you so that they can recieve the amount of attention that they want, so you are left out and alone.
